# Exploramo - Why Most Hotel Photos Kill Bookings (And How to Fix It)

You've spent $10,000 on a website redesign. Your rooms are immaculate. Your staff is trained to perfection. And yet, potential guests are bouncing off your booking page like it's made of rubber. The culprit? That photo of your ocean-view suite that somehow makes it look like a hospital waiting room.

## The Hard Reality of Hotel Photography

The reality is stark: photo quality consistently ranks among the most important factors when choosing accommodation online. Not the room rate. Not the location. The photos.

Yet walk through the websites of most Australian hotels - from boutique Noosa retreats to Gold Coast high-rises - and you'll find the same photography sins repeated over and over. Dark rooms that look dingy instead of cosy. Wide-angle shots so aggressive they make a king suite look like a fish-eye fever dream. Empty lobbies that feel less "sophisticated" and more "where did everyone go?"

Your photos aren't just images. They're your first (and often only) chance to make someone choose your property over the 47 other options in their browser tabs.

## The Four Photography Mistakes Costing You Bookings

### 1. The Dungeon Effect

Nothing screams "run away" quite like a dark hotel room photo. We've audited hundreds of hotel websites, and underlit photography is the single most common issue we see. That moody, atmospheric vibe you were going for? Guests read it as "old carpet smell."

**The fix**: Shoot during golden hour (early morning or late afternoon) when natural light floods the room. Open every curtain and blind. If you're photographing at night, turn on every light source - lamps, bathroom lights, even the TV on a bright screen. You can always edit down, but you can't add light that isn't there.

### 2. The Fun House Mirror

Ultra-wide-angle lenses are tempting because they make spaces look bigger. But push it too far and your rooms start looking like something from a Salvador Dalí painting. Guests arrive expecting the cavern they saw online, only to find a perfectly normal (and now disappointing) hotel room.

**The fix**: Use a moderate wide angle - something between 16-24mm on a full-frame camera. It shows scale without distortion. And always shoot from a corner at about hip height. This gives depth while keeping proportions honest.

### 3. The Crime Scene

Empty rooms photograph like crime scenes. No towels artfully folded. No book on the nightstand. No steam rising from a coffee cup on the balcony. Just sterile, soulless space.

**The fix**: Stage your rooms like you're expecting a guest who has excellent taste. Fresh flowers (nothing too elaborate - this isn't a funeral home). A folded throw at the foot of the bed. Wine glasses catching the sunset light on the balcony. You're selling a feeling, not floor space.

### 4. The Accidental Honesty

That photo showcasing your stunning Mooloolaba beachfront view? It also showcases the dated ceiling fan, the mismatched bedding, and the aircon unit that's seen better days.

**The fix**: Before shooting, do a "fresh eyes" walk-through. Better yet, ask someone who's never seen the room to point out anything that looks tired, cluttered, or just off. Sometimes we're so used to seeing that wobbly lampshade that we forget it's there.

## The 72-Hour Photo Audit

Something you can do this week: Open your website on your phone (because around 60% of global web traffic now happens on mobile devices, according to [Statista](https://www.statista.com/statistics/277125/share-of-website-traffic-coming-from-mobile-devices/) - and if your site isn't [optimised for mobile](/insights/mobile-first-hotel-websites/index.md), that's a separate conversation). Look at your top five room photos. For each one, ask: "Would I book this room based on this image alone?"

If the answer is anything less than an enthusiastic yes, it's time for a reshoot. A professional hospitality photographer will cost you somewhere between $500 and $2,000 for a day - roughly the same as one or two direct bookings. The ROI practically calculates itself.

## The Bigger Picture

Great photography isn't just about pretty pictures. It's about trust. When your images accurately represent - and flatter - your property, guests arrive with expectations you can meet. That means better reviews, more repeat bookings, and fewer guests [abandoning at checkout](/insights/booking-abandonment/index.md) because something felt off.

It's also one of the reasons we shoot [hotel photography](/gold-coast-hotel-photography/index.md) ourselves at Exploramo. We know which shots actually drive bookings - the hero images that stop the scroll, the room angles that answer guest questions, the detail work that builds trust before someone ever picks up the phone. That context shapes every shoot.

If your photos aren't pulling their weight, we can help - whether that's a full property reshoot, a visual content audit, or a website that finally does your rooms justice. Your rooms deserve better than smartphone snaps and crossed fingers.
